Looking back at news and events from the Moffat Branch

2013 Commemorative event for Air Chief Marshal Sir Hugh Dowding

A commemorative event was held in Moffat to honour Air Chief Marshal Sir Hugh Dowding on Sunday, September 10th, 2013.

Air Chief Marshal Dowding was Air Officer Commanding at RAF Fighter Command during the Battle of Britain. Hugh Dowding was the mastermind behind the RAF’s success in preventing the Luftwaffe achieving air superiority over the UK forcing Hitler to postpone and eventually cancel Operation Sea Lion, a proposed amphibious and airborne invasion of Britain.

The event held in Moffat’s Station Park featured a Spitfire flypast and the Pipes and Drums of RAF Leuchars.

2013 Poppy Appeal

The Moffat Branch of the Royal British Legion Scotland, raised £3,702.99 at this year's Poppy Appeal. The President and Committee want to thank everybody for their tremendous support. Thanks must also go to the counters who did a terrific job. The Bank informs me that all the bags were correct - thank you. The total is slightly down on last year's, but due to the economic climate, this is to be expected.

Everybody did a fabulous job, but mention must be made of a number of Members who were able to make the extra effort. Bill Lindsay who collected £573.35, Jimmy Wynd £368.77, George Allan £261.09 and the champion collector was again Tommy Lane with £1,027.34. Thanks to everybody concerned.
